In 1980 Dutch saxophone player Boris Van Der Lek got the jazz virus and from then on there simply was no stopping him. A turbulent career followed playing on stages worldwide and with many legends of the genre such as Joe Pass and Harry ‘Sweets’ Edison. In 1987 he became a member of the ensemble The Houdini’s and a wild time ensued with stints with the Tough Tenors, Trio Me Reet, Livin’ Blues, Golden Earring and Herman Brood & His Wild Romance. After a relatively quieter period, where Boris acquired significant skills in the billiards (!), the end of last year saw the release of a new album with the night mayor of Rotterdam Jules Deelder, simply called ‘Jazz’. With the following gigs we can surely speak of a Boris Van Der Lek revival and more and more voices recognize him as arguably the best tenor man in (Western) Europe. So all the more reason to reissue his originally in 2005 released album ‘Blue & Sentimental’ for the first time on vinyl. Together with Thijs van Leer, Han Bennink, Ton van Bergeijk and Hein van de Geyn, he makes ten standards his own with his unique timbre. A perfect album for rainy afternoons, sultry evenings and rough nights.
